Very Rare Aethelred II 'Barnstaple/Aelfsige' Second Hand Penny
Silver, 1.18 grams, 20.67 mm. Second Hand Type; 985-991 AD. Obverse: profile bust right with sceptre and legend +AEDELRED REX ANGLOR. Reverse: hand issuing from clouds with 'A' to left and 'W' to right with legend +AELFSIGE M-O BARD for the moneyer Aelfsige at the mint of Barnstaple. A search through the Early Medieval Corpus and SCBI shows that this moneyer is known to have issued at this mint for the CRUX and Long Cross types but is apparently not previously known for the Second Hand Type. This type is known for this mint, but only for another moneyer. S. 1146; N. 768; EMC -; SCBI -. A rare mint and apparently the moneyer not known to have issued this early type. With a fine crack across part of the coin but stable, otherwise about good very fine and very rare. [Barnstaple alone books at £900.00 in VF in Coins of England 2009].
