Anglo-Norman 'Openwork' Key
Copper-alloy, 13.61 grams, 61.50 mm. Circa 11th-12th century AD. A chest or casket key comprising an elliptical D-section bow with chevron patterning, developing into a carinated shank with similar decoration. The head of the key is an openwork cruciform panel with additional arms on the upper edges of the cross and a curved, pelta-shaped profile to the leading edge. Reference: Murawski, P. Benet's Artefacts of England and the United Kingdom, Ely, 2003 items V17-0102/3/4. Good very fine condition, some wear to the bow. Provenance: from an old English collection.
