Anglo-Saxon 'Animal-Head' Bow Brooch Finial
Copper-alloy, 9.62 grams, 28.55 mm. Circa 6th century AD. A bow brooch finial in the form of a stylized beast's head with D-section bow, triangular eyes, ribbed muzzle and lobed nostrils and a raised median panel. The flat flange at the top is pierced for attachment to the lower end of a cruciform brooch. Reference: Hattatt, R. Iron Age and Roman Brooches, Oxford, 1985 items 672-7. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Harston, Cambridgeshire, England.
