Anglo-Saxon ‘Animal Head’ Brooch Terminal
Silver gilt, 2.32 grams, 14.34 mm. 5th-6th century AD. A nicely moulded hollow-cast terminal from an Anglo-Saxon fastener, probably from a high-quality cruciform or great square-headed brooch. The piece is D-section with heavy collar detailing and lentoid eyes extending to a square muzzle. Reference: compare the knobs on the head of the brooch from Barrington A (Cambs) published in MacGregor, A. & Bolick, E. A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (Non-Ferrous Metals), Oxford, 1993, p.119 item 13.16. Very fine condition. Provenance: from an English collection formed in the 1970's, findspot unknown.
