Anglo-Saxon 'Animal-Head' Buckle
Copper-alloy, 4.11 grams, 24.21 mm. 10th-11th century AD. A beautifully-made late Anglo-Saxon buckle loop, slightly dished in profile, showing Scandinavian influence in the execution of the zoomorphs. The round-section bar is held between two drooping animal-heads with bulbous, ovoid eyes and c-scroll ears. A ribbed central collar forms the rest for the tongue. Reference: Backhouse, J.
