Anglo-Saxon 'Applied Disc' Brooch Insert 019125
Anglo-Saxon 'Applied Disc' Brooch Insert
Copper-alloy, 0.86 grams, 39.12 mm. 6th-7th century AD. A class of Kentish disc brooches features a plain cast disc ornamented with a thin surface panel made as a disc with repoussé geometric decoration. The present piece appears to be the applied plate from such a brooch, subsequently dished and pierced for suspension or re-attachment elsewhere. The design comprises a central rosette within a band of C-shaped elements surrounded by a billeted border; outside this is a geometric band of lozenges with interstitial points. Reference: MacGregor, A. & Bolick, E. A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (Non-Ferrous Metals), BAR British Series 230, 1993, p.76. Very fine condition. Provenance: ex Nigel Mills collection.
