Anglo-Saxon 'Concentric Crescents' Cruciform Brooch
Copper-alloy, 12.09 grams, 59.23 mm. 5th-6th century AD. A neat example of the earlier type of cruciform brooch. The rhomboid headplate is flanked by lateral rectangular wings with rounded corners and small D-section extensions. The top-knob is cast in one with the headplate, D-section and sub-triangular in plan, with a ribbed collar. The wings each have an incised external border, against which are placed three crescentic punchmarks on each. The carinated bow springs from a facetted base and extends to a plain lozengiform footplate with an animal-head terminal. The catchplate is intact and the spring lug retains part of the iron pin.
