Anglo-Saxon 'Filigree' Book or Manuscript Mount 018700
Very Rare Anglo-Saxon 'Filigree' Book or Manuscript Mount
Gold, 1.31 grams, 14.77 mm. 6th-7th century AD. A finely made gold mount, its surface covered in coiled filigree and granulation. Two large filigree annulets may be the collets for cabochon garnets, lost in antiquity. The reverse is pierced where the fixing pin was attached. The mount was made as a hollow shell with a circular base, and probably domed. Reference: cf. a similar filigree hollow mount from Martlesham (Suffolk) in West, S. A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Material from Suffolk, East Anglian Archaeology 84, Ipswich, 1998, p.81 and fig 114(5). Very fine, with some damage. Provenance: ex old English collection, with old sales ticket. Lockdales Auction 76, lot 1140. This antiquity is accompanied by an XRF metal test certificate from Oxford X-ray Fluorescence Ltd.
