Rare Anglo-Saxon 'Filigree Hoops' Biconical Bead
Gold, 2.03 grams, 28.39 mm. 7th century AD. A sheet gold biconical bead. The bead is formed as two conjoined funicular elements with beaded wire collars to the outer ends and delicate filigree hoops covering the outer surface. Reference: cf. gold wound-wire biconical beads on the Desborough necklace, late 7th century in date, published in Webster, L. & Backhouse, J. The Making of England. Anglo-Saxon Art and Culture AD 600-900, item 13. Very fine condition, repaired. Provenance: from a Canadian collection, ex Sotheby's Lord McAlpine sale London, 17th February 1994.
