Anglo-Saxon 'Foliage' Mount 021485
Anglo-Saxon 'Foliage' Mount
Gilt copper-alloy, 1.82 grams, 28.75 mm. Circa 9th-10th century AD. A thin cast lozengiform mount depicting a coiled sprig with three hatched lanceolate leaves emerging, within a hatched border. The design is similar in execution to the plant motif on the reverse of the Alfred Jewel, although the tightly curved format reflects contemporary Carolingian taste. Reference: Backhouse, J., Turner, D.H. and Webster, L. The Golden Age of Anglo-Saxon Art 966-1066, London, 1984, item 13. Very fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection, found Stowmarket, Suffolk, England in 1978.
