Anglo-Saxon 'Horse-Head' Strap End
Copper-alloy, 5.19 grams, 32.72 mm. 5th-6th century AD. A D-section cast strap end comprising a flat upper section above a series of collars; from the waist the profile expands to a sub-triangular lower section with discoid eyes, an expanding muzzle and everted spiral nostrils. The form is reminiscent of the footplate terminals from a class of large cruciform brooches. The flat section has a single piercing to accept an attachment rivet. Reference: West. S.
