Anglo-Saxon 'Insular Style' Pin Head
Copper-alloy, 1.86 grams, 33.96 mm. 8th-9th century AD. The upper section of the head from a decorative dress pin, formed as a disc with a cruciform design and with knotwork motifs in the quadrants, one a simple triquetra and the other a double triquetra and lower loop, all on a pecked background. The gilding on the decorative surface is heavy and complete; the reverse is plain. Reference: cf. linked three-pin set from River Witham, Lincolnshire in Webster, L. & Backhouse, J.
