Anglo-Saxon 'Knotwork' Pendant
Gilt copper-alloy, 8.03 grams, 33.48 mm. 6th century AD. A cast disc pendant or mount comprising a central cabochon setting for a garnet (lost in antiquity) surrounded by a ring of Style II three-band knotwork. The original gilding remains in the recesses of the design. It is similar to a jewelled pendant from Faversham, Kent, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Reference: MacGregor, A. and Bolick, E.
