Anglo-Saxon 'Quincunx' Cloisonné Brooch 015161
Anglo-Saxon 'Quincunx' Cloisonné Brooch
Copper-alloy, 2.92 grams, 13.82 mm. 6th-7th century. A delicate "cloisonné" disc brooch, its enamelled surface bearing four incised crescents imitating the form of genuine garnet cloisonné jewellery of the late 6th and early 7th century, leaving an expanding-arm cross in reserve. Each arm bears an incised point and with the central one they form a quincunx. The catchplate is intact, but the attachment lug was broken in antiquity. Reference: for jewelled disc brooches, see MacGregor, A. & Bolick, E. A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (Non-Ferrous Metals), BAR British Series 230, 1993, p.70-2. Provenance: found Norfolk. Extremely fine condition.
