Anglo-Saxon 'Ridged' Caterpillar Brooch
Copper-alloy, 5.33 grams, 33.46 mm. 8th-9th century AD. Caterpillar brooches are a Middle Anglo-Saxon fastener for light garments such as shawls or linen tunics. This example bears three equidistant rides or rectangular transverse bars – one at the centre of the bow and one at each end. The catchplate and hinge lugs are partly present. Reference: West, S.
