Anglo-Saxon 'Style I Zoomorph' Button Brooch Stud
Copper-alloy gilt, 2.08 grams, 14.49 mm. 5th-6th century AD. A discoid stud with cast gilded zoomorphic detail. The design is a Style I zoomorph similar to those found on button brooches of Avent and Evison's Class L probably having used such a brooch to create the mould for the disc. The heavy gilding is largely intact. Reference: cf. the button brooch from Bifrons, Kent, in Avent, R. and Evison, V.I. Anglo-Saxon Button Brooches in Archaeologia vol.CVII, 1982. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Wiltshire, England.
