Anglo-Saxon 'Style I Zoomorph' Lozenge-Shaped Pendant 019411
Anglo-Saxon 'Style I Zoomorph' Lozenge-Shaped Pendant
Copper-alloy gilt, 5.55 grams, 20.13 mm. 5th-6th century AD. A flat square plate with a recessed central panel of Style I ornament executed in chip-carving. The zoomorphic content is reduced to two pairs of animal paws joined at the ankle surrounding a central square or lozenge. The original heavy gilding is largely present within the central panel. The mounting pin is present on the reverse. A circular hole in one corner suggests that the mount was re-used as a pendant. Reference: Smith, R.A.
