Anglo-Saxon 'Trewhiddle Style' Zoomorphic Strap End
Silver, 7.40 grams, 40.65 mm. Circa 9th century AD. A crisply-cast, convex-sided, square-ended strap end with a stylized animal head terminal; the square snout is surmounted by beaded lateral eyes and stylized rectangular ears. Above the head is a rectangular field containing a Trewhiddle Style zoomorphic motif surrounded by a zone of impressed roundels within square panels. A medial triangle with lateral triangular wings develops from the top to respect the surrounds of two silver rivets, both still in place. A sturdy and finely-made example of Middle Saxon metalwork with nielleo inlay to accentuate the silver coloration. Reference: Smith, R.A.
