Anglo-Saxon 'Triangular-Headed' Small-Long Brooch 017040

Anglo-Saxon 'Triangular-Headed' Small-Long Brooch 017040
Rare Anglo-Saxon ‘Triangular-Headed’ Small-Long Brooch
Copper-alloy, 4.43 grams, 40.24 mm. 5th-6th century AD. An unusual small-long brooch with a triangular headplate featuring three lobed extensions and a billeted border with a double roundel beneath the upper lobe. The bow is heavily ridged. The footplate mirrors the headplate except that it has no lobes at the bow end and there are three roundels above the finial. The lug and catchplate are in place on the reverse. The brooch is similar in form to some Merovingian Frankish equal-armed bow-brooches but the footplate is 25% longer then the headplate. A brooch (accession number 1905,0520.193) of the same overall form but larger is in the British Museum, acquired at from the Delamain Collection, Herpes (Charente, France) but of Ostrogothic origin. Reference: Hines, J. A New Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Great Square-Headed Brooches, London, 1997 p.249. Extremely fine condition. Provenance: found near Snettisham, Norfolk, England.
