Anglo-Saxon 'Winchester Style' Class E Strap End
Copper-alloy, 9.33 grams, 38.36 mm. 10th-11th century AD. The Late Saxon 'Class E' strap ends are tongue-shaped and often decorated with plant-based ornament in the Winchester Style. The present example is of the classic profile, but has a bilinear knotwork panel within a ring-and-dot border. The casting features a split in the upper edge to accommodate the leather strap or belt to which it was attached. Similar forms were used by Anglo-Scandinavians and Vikings in the British Isles. Reference: Thomas, G. Late Anglo-Saxon and Viking Age Strap-Ends 750-1100: Part 2, Finds Research Group Datasheet 33. Very fine condition.
