Rare Anglo-Scandinavian / Viking 'Class B Type 1 Group 1' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 17.86 grams, 37.35 mm. Circa 11th century AD. A cast copper-alloy stirrup mount of Williams' Class B Type 1 Group 1. Unusually, it is formed with everted animal-head extensions at the top, a feature usually found on Class A Type 8 mounts. The plate is decorated with ribbing around the voids. Reference: Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts - A Classification and Catalogue, CBA Research Report 111, Oxford, 1997, items 387 and 395. Very fine condition. Provenance: found in northeast Lincolnshire.
