Anglo-Scandinavian / Viking 'Group B Type 3' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 30.3 grams, 43.65 mm. Circa 11th century AD. A cast copper-alloy stirrup mount with openwork design surrounding a central beast-head modelled in the half-round with projecting lobe ears. Traces of a scrolled linear design remain on the plate. The flange is complete, pierced with two attachment holes. Reference: Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts - A Classification and Catalogue, CBA Research Report 111, Oxford, 1997, p.92-4. Very fine condition, complete. Provenance: found Brewood, Staffordshire, England and recorded with the PAS under reference WMID-E025E3.
