Anglo-Scandinavian / Viking 'Type 5' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 23.57 grams, 54.03 mm. Circa 11th century AD. A cast copper-alloy stirrup mount of Williams's Type 5 formed as a pentagonal plate with two tendrils above, each with a scrolled end, joining at the apex to form a beast-head with the attachment loop in its mouth. The T-shaped ledge to the lower rear is crisply cast, and the single rivet hole is placed above this; there are traces of ferrous deposits where the rivet entered. The edges of the pentagonal plate are decorated with lines of punched-point detail which extend to surround the rivet hole. Reference: Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts, CBA Research Report 111, London, 1997 items 95 (punched point ornament) and 92 (single rivet hole). Very fine condition, complete.
