Anglo-Scandinavian / Viking 'Type A16' Stirrup Mount
Copper-alloy, 37.86 grams, 51.06 mm. Circa 11th century AD. A cast copper-alloy stirrup mount of Williams's Class A Type 16. The suspension loop is complete with its transverse wings, the stylised animal mask is distinct and the addorsed animal heads are in relief. The flange on the rear of the lower edge is rivetted to the remains of the bracket. Reference: Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts, CBA Research Report 111, London, 1997 item 360-3.
