Arcadius (383 - 408 AD) Flavius Arcadius was Byzantine Emperor in the Eastern half of the Roman Empire from 395 until his death.

(Siliqua after 394 AD were halved in weight from 1.9 g to about 0.9 g) in order to combat the increasing silver shortage due to the loss of silver-producing cities to enemies. Obverse: DN ARCADI-VS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: VOT X MVLT XX, in four lines within wreath. The uneven engraving of the legends, rough hair lines, unnatural eye and nose and overly large lettering on the reverse are signs of this being an ancient imitation. The X shape in the binding at the bottom of the wreath suggest that it is an imitation of issues from Constantinople. Imitative of RIC IX Constantinople 77e/87b. Good very fine. | £175.00  |  |
