Avar ‘Hunting Scene’ Strap End
Silver, 6.49 grams, 49.32 mm. 5th-8th century AD. An embossed foil tongue-shaped strap end showing a hunt scene: a mountain lion chasing its prey. Both animals are shown in profile with tails erect, the animal in front looking back towards its pursuer. The border of the piece is dished and segmented. Two rivets are placed beside the upper edge, with mineralized remains of the supporting surface attached. Reference: Vickers, M. Scythian and Thracian Antiquities, Oxford, 2002 p.38-9 and cf.
