British Bronze Age 'Ground' Handaxe
Basalt, 135 grams, 95.20 mm. Circa 2,500-2,000 BC. A neatly fashioned handaxe with ground and polished surface. To one face, an old collector's inked rubric: "STONE BRONZE AGE HAND AXE (2-4000 BC)". Reference: Evans, J. The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons and Ornaments of Great Britain and Ireland, London, 1881 item 44. Fine condition. Provenance: found at High Ferrers, Northamptonshire, UK.
