British Neolithic 'Polished' Thin-Butted Axe 014949
British Neolithic 'Polished' Thin-Butted Axe
Flint, 580 grams, 174 x 75 x 35 mm. Circa 5,000-3,000 BC. A large fragment, being the butt end, of an exceptionally large fully polished axe. Of a milky grey flint throughout, with some patination to the polished surfaces. The upper and lower faces polished to a gentle curve, with the sides being characteristically flat and straight. Reference: Sir John Evans Ancient Stone Implements of Great Britain, page 111, figure 53 for a very similar example. A lovely and affordable example of the skill employed in polishing flint implements by hand.
