A cast pewter spoon with broad bowl and elliptical-section handle terminating in a stylized acorn. Close to the handle within the bowl is the stamped maker's mark comprising a bilinear circle surrounding the initials 'EM' beneath a crown or volute. Reference: Read, B. | | Post-Medieval Georgian 'Bawdy' Erotic Pipe Tamper 022630 | Post-Medieval Georgian 'Bawdy' Erotic Pipe Tamper Copper-alloy, 65 grams, 49.15 mm. Circa 18th century AD. A cast copper-alloy pipe tamper with stem missing. The handle is formed as a female bent over and peering between her legs, with skirt drawn up and exposing herself. Pipe tampers were produced from the late 16th century to provide smokers with a tool for compressing the tobacco in the pipe bowl to ensure slow burning of the tobacco. | | Post-Medieval 'Niello' Finger Ring 019737 | Post-Medieval 'Niello' Finger Ring Silver and niello, 6.12 grams, 21.11 mm overall (approximate size British Q, US 8 1/4, Europe 18.12, Japan 18). Circa 17th-18th century AD. A silver finger ring with flat-section hoop and expanding shoulders with a rectangular bezel. The shoulders bear stylised foliage patterns reserved against a niello background, and the bezel features three roundels surrounded by foliage. Reference: Oman, C.C. | | Jacobite 'Dread God' Stamp Seal 009817 | Rare Jacobite 'Dread God' Stamp Seal Copper-alloy and carnelian, 5.54 grams, 25.49 mm. Circa 18th-19th century AD. An elliptical onyx intaglio within a stepped copper-alloy frame with lobes for an openwork handle (lost in antiquity). The design of the intaglio features a bearded male with naked torso, left hand on hip and right arm extended; above this the motto DREAD GOD in seriffed capitals and below a wreath. Below this a hatched cartouche bearing the initials RG in an ornate copperplate hand. The phrase 'Dread God' is the motto of the Scottish Monro clan. Reference: cf. Pateman, B. | | Georgian 'Bulb-Headed' Hair Pin / Bodkin 019918 | Georgian 'Bulb-Headed' Hair Pin / Bodkin Silver, 5.32 grams, 88.07 mm. 18th century AD. A rectangular-section shaft with a bulbous knop at the top. The shaft is pierced at the tope with a circular hole and below this is placed a rectangular slot. The initials RN are inscribed below the slot in voided capitals. Bodkins were used in the Tudor and Stuart periods as female dress accessories; the upper hole was used to attach a pearl pendant to the shaft. Reference: Bailey, G. A cast bifacial mount in the form of a grimacing male face with short hair, a heavy furrowed brow, c-shaped ears, rounded nose and inflated cheeks which extend on both sides of a rectangular slot. The piece is pierced longitudinally with a quadrangular slot. | | Georgian 'Rococo' Figural Seal 018426 | Georgian 'Rococo' Figural Seal Copper-alloy and glass, 5.71 grams, 30.60 mm. Circa 1850 AD. A red glass intaglio set into a delicate rococo frame for use as a seal. The bronzework is a good example of Georgian style, its gentle curves imitating natural forms. The motif of the seal is a male figure in classical drapery, with a sabre in his raised right hand and a severed head in his left. The legend depicted possibly represents the decapitation of Medusa which is the culmination of the tale of Perseus, however there are many ancient stories to choose from in which a beheading forms a significant event. Of cast form with a very well detailed heraldic boar's head crest. The plain reverse shows evidence of where iron fixing studs were orginally fitted. Crest mounts of this form were affixed to harness or carriage doors to indicate the name of the owner. A large medieval cooking pot with three short feet on a rounded base. The sides are of a ribbed style, high with a large out stepped rim and rolled lip; the handle is short and thick in cross section. | | PM 010259 | Post Medieval 'Masonic' Silver Clothes Fastener Silver, 1.69 grams; 25.99 mm. Circa 16th-17th century AD. A beautiful cast silver convex moulded-relief clothes fastener, leaf-shaped and detailed with a high and low relief chequered pattern, possibly Masonic. The eye-section that receives the male fastener is small with rounded sides and has a fixing loop either side, the end terminal is in the form of a degraded trefoil and the fixing hole is positioned just above.
