Iron Age Celtic ‘Attacking Rider’ Figurine
Copper-alloy, 15.32 grams, 47.79 mm. 2nd-1st century BC. A well-proportioned Iron Age figurine of a cavalryman in cowl and tunic, trousers and shoes. His left arm hangs down to grasp the reins and the right arm is raised to brandish a spear aggressively; both hands were lost in antiquity. The figurine's short-sleeved and wide-skirted tunic is carefully modelled. Reference: cf. the rider figurine in the Museo Arqueologico Nacional, Madrid in Kruta, V. Celts - History & Civilization, London, 2004, p.97 and the mounted figures on the bronze cult waggon from Strettweg, Austria, in Megaw, R. & V. Celtic Art From its Beginnings to the Book of Kells, London,1989, p.33 fig.19. Very fine condition. Provenance: found near Harston, Cambridgeshire, England.
