Celtic British 'Double Toggle' Fastener
Copper-alloy, 13.03 grams, 31.86 mm. 1st century BC - 1st century AD. A cast clothes fastener formed as a pierced triangular plate with a D-section right-angled extension terminating in a pair of flat discs. The triangular plate was sewn to one side of the garment and the discs were pushed through a slit to secure the closure. Reference: cf. the single-disc example from York in Smith, R.A.
