Copper-alloy and enamel, 26.57 grams, 41.12 mm. 2nd century AD. A Romano-British high-status brooch type, with pierced lugs at both sides on the lower edge, through which passed a rod to which small toilet articles were attached. The present example has a D-sjaped headplate with symmetrically placed reserved La Tčne trumpet motifs against a dark blue enamel field. At the top of the brooch is a pierced lug for attachment to a securing pin, whereas the majority of examples have pin-lugs and catchplat cast on the reverse, and a decorated disc surmounting the headplate. Reference: cf. Hattatt, R. Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987 items 1081-3 with geometric, Roman-derived decoration. Fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.
