Charles I 'Newark Besieged' Shilling
Silver, 5.70 grams, 41.77 mm. Newark emergency coinage; dated 1645 AD. Obverse: crude flat crown dividing intials 'C' and 'R' with mark of value 'XII' below. Reverse: legend OBS NEWARKE 1645 in three lines. S. 3141; N. 2639; Brooker 1223 (same dies). This crown variant very rare, pierced for suspension as these coins were often worn as amulets by supporters of the King. Near very fine.
