Extremely Rare Cnut 'Thetford/Sprunt' Long Cross Viking Penny
Silver, 1.04 grams, 19.41 mm. Scandinavian Issue Long Cross type; circa 1019 AD. Obverse: crowned bust left with legend +CNVT REX ANGLOx and commencing at ten o'clock. Reverse: long cross over quatrefoil dividing legend +SP RVNT OND EOD for the moneyer Sprunt at the mint of Thetford. One example (from different dies) is listed in the Early Medieval Corpus, number 1015.3850. S.-; N. 796. Extremely rare, the mint not listed in North for this issue. Unusual placing of the obverse legend. Extremely fine, almost as struck.
