Excessively Rare Cnut 'Gilded Brooch' Penny
Silver, 1.18 grams; 17.78 mm. Circa 1029-1035 AD. A Saxon penny made into a unique piece of jewellery, gold gilded on the reverse to worn as a penny brooch, the mount and pin have been removed or lost in antiquity and could suggest that the coin was then put back into circulation. Obverse: +CNVT REX, diademed bust left with sceptre in front. Reverse: +DVRVLF ON STANF, Thorulfr at Stanford, voided short cross with circle enclosing pellet in centre. Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University as EMC 2008.0324. S 1159; N 790. Good very fine and rare. Found Stockbridge Down.
