Corieltauvi 'Kite Type' Stater
Gold, 4.81 grams; 19.07 mm. Circa mid to late 1st century BC. Corieltauvian G. Obverse: almost a uniface. Reverse: disjointed horse left, diamond shape above containing four pellets, three-armed spiral below horse, three pellets at end of each spiral arm. Celtic Coin Index Registration Number at Oxford University: CCI 09.3021. S. 392; M. 447; VA. 825; BMC. 3181-84. [Van Arsdell classified this coin as extremely rare, with most in museums]. Very fine condition.
Dr John Sills of the Celtic Coin Index at Oxford University writes: “not clear how may pellets this one has in the diamond but it looks like four. An almost uniface type from late in the kite series, which probably explains the relatively low weight.”
