Unpublished Eadgar 'EADELM' Two Line Type Silver Penny
Silver, 1.29 grams; 20.91 mm. Two Line (Horizontal) Type; 959-972 AD. Obverse: small cross at centre with legend EADGAR REX. Reverse: line of three small crosses at centre with a trefoil at top and bottom and legend EADE LMO+ in two lines for a moneyer possibly named Eadhelm. This moneyer name is not listed for Edgar in the EMC or SCBI. The moneyer name as shown on the coin does appear (as EADELM) in the coinage of Aethelred II and Cnut but is apparently unrecorded for other reigns. S. 1129; N. 741. This is an excessively rare, possibly unique, coin and an excellent example of a type usually seen with edge chips or cracks. Almost extremely fine. Found Ixworth, Suffolk.
