Extremely Rare [unrecorded dies] Ecgberht 'Winchester Mint' Monogram Penny
Silver, 1.18 grams; 19.99 mm. Monogram type; 802-839 AD. Obverse: legend reading +ECGBERHT REX around the central monogram of SAXON. Reverse: legend reading +IFA MONETA with unbarred ‘A’s around the central short cross for the moneyer Ifa at the mint of Winchester. See SCBI 9, 232 and SCBI 42, 726 for two other coins (die duplicates of each other) of this type. These are the only two examples of this type listed in EMC or published in SCBI volumes. The dies for this coin are distinctly different from the two published coins and appear to be previously unrecorded. S. 1041; N. 589; BMC -; SCBI/EMC -. Very fine and better. An extremely rare coin; well preserved with only the usual slightly irregular edge.
