Egyptian 'Anubis' Statue Amulet
Glazed powdered quartz composite (faience), 13.85 grams, 64.45 mm. Saite Period 664-525 BC. An extremely large pale green statue amulet of Anubis, the jackal-headed god of embalming who had to be propitiated to ensure entry into the afterlife. The details of costume and posture are finely moulded on this large piece. Made with a transverse piercing behind the shoulders for suspension. Reference: Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p.24. Very fine condition, some damage to the upper head area in antiquity. Provenance: from an old English collection.
