Egyptian 'Bes' Late Dynastic Period Bifacial Amulet
Glazed powdered quartz composite (faience), 0.59 grams, 12.06 mm. Late Dynastic Period, circa 715-332 BC. A dark green faience amulet showing Bes in stylized form on both faces, with pot belly and bow legs, hands on hips; made with a transverse piercing for suspension. Bes was invoked to supervise in childbirth and was especially favoured by women in labour. Reference: Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, pl.37.
