Egyptian 'Mayhes' Amulet
Glazed powdered quartz composite (faience), 0.72 grams, 19.84 mm. Third Intermediate Period, circa 1069-702 BC. A pale green amulet depisting the lion-headed god Mayhes, standing, wearing the atef crown. The amulet is formed with a transverse piercing behind the head for suspension. Mayhes (known in Greek as Miyses) was a son of Bastet who fought with the sun-god against the serpent, Apophis. Reference: Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p.25.
