Egyptian 'Sow' Amulet Pendant
Faience, 0.72 grams, 14.03 mm. 11th-10th century BC. 3rd Intermediate Period (21st-25th Dynasties). A pale blue amulet of a sow with arched back and dangling teats. The sow was among the animals sacrificed to Osiris annually and represented the night sky with its litter of stars. Made with a transverse piercing in the upper block for suspension. Reference: Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, pl.35. Very fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.
