Egyptian 'Taweret' Amulet
Glazed powdered quartz composite (faience), 0.96 grams, 20.38 mm. Late Dynastic Period circa 715-332 BC. A pale green amulet of Taweret with hippopotamus head, arms folded beneath the breasts, standing upright before a post, pierced for suspension. Taweret (known to the Greeks as Thoeris) was associated with childbirth, and was a powerful and benevolent deity. Reference: Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p.40. Good fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.
