Egyptian 'Wedjat Eye' Amulet
Faience, 2.83 grams, 28.63 mm. 11th-10th century BC. 3rd Intermediate Period (21st-25th Dynasties). The wedjat is the eye of the falcon-headed god, Horus, son of Osiris and the creator deity; the god's eyes are associated with the sun and moon. The piece is in two-tone faience, dark brown on a pale green surface, with a plain reverse and transverse piercing. The pupil is a raised disc of the same dark brown material. Reference: Andrews, C. Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p.44 and pl.46. Very fine condition. Provenance: from an old English collection.
