Rare George III 'Cartwheel'' Countermarked Twopence
Bronze, 56.77 grams, 40.96 mm. 1797 AD. 'Cartwheel' Issue. Obverse: profile bust right with GEORGIUS III D G REX incuse legend. Reverse: Britannia seated left with BRITANNIA 1797 incuse legend. Countermarked several times both sides with the unattributed 'crown over IS' mark in two forms, one within a dentilled cartouche (this form not mentioned in Scott) and also with two large 'pellets' on obverse rim below and right of bust (to signify a unit of weight - for 2 ounces?). Coin - S. 3775; Countermark - Scott 123.130 (on 1773 halfpenny - see pl. 7) and 123.132 (on 1799 farthing, Bliss sale). Very fine.
Copper, 12.82 grams. Dated 1799. Laureate bust. Obv: with GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA REX legend. Rev: Britannia seated with SOHO in waves, ship with 6 gunports in relief, date 1799 below and BRITANNIA legend. S. 3778; Peck 1249. Uncirculated with some lustre.
Copper, 4.69 grams, 22.91 mm. Second issue; dated 1699. Obverse: profile bust with GVLIELMVS TERTIVS legend. Reverse: Britannia seated with BRITANNIA legend and date with no stop after. S. 3558; Peck 665[R]. Good fine.
