This listing of British numismatic auction sales for the early eighteenth century to almost the present day is a valuable resource to cataloguers and researchers. Until 1840, coins and medals frequently were included in more general collections – often made by well-known personages – and these catalogues offer a research opportunity into early collectors and their interests. The last half of the nineteenth century saw a greatly increased number of named and unnamed numismatic sales and, with a few notable exceptions, coins and medals from these collections have the earliest pedigrees cited for many outstanding pieces offered in the most important collections today.

Encyclopædia of British Numismatics, Volume 2, Part 1, Numismatic Guide to British & Irish Periodicals 1731-1991 (Archaeological). London 1993. 570 pages, illustrated. Library Buckram. This second volume of the encyclopædia is the next logical step after the index of British and Irish Numismatic Auction Catalogues. It is a bibliography of numismatic material in British periodicals. In addition to numismatic publications, those on archæology are included. After looking through many of the early news magazines, two also appeared to be essential sources, The Gentleman’s Magazine, the first magazine of any kind, with much numismatically-related material, and The Scots Magazine. The importance of the former lessened with the advent of The Numismatic Journal (1836) and The Numismatic Chronicle (1838). There was no such problem with The Scots Magazine, because it abruptly ceased publication in mid-1826. It is hoped that the present volume will be useful in suggesting where material on specific topics may be found but, as reflected in the title, it is intended only as a guide to the periodical (serial) literature. If it helps to point the way to the material in sometimes obscure sources and saves research repetition, then its purpose will have been fulfilled. Numismatists interested in most subjects of the past few centuries will have little concern for the archæological context, if any, of their material, but they cannot afford to ignore the historical and, indeed, social and economic context of the times, whether it be the dearth of mint silver in the latter half of the eighteenth century, the profusion of pub checks in the nineteenth, or the phasing-out of silver coinage in the twentieth. The news magazines reviewed here help to place numismatics within society. Legal specialists may be interested in the gradual revulsion against capital punishment for coinage offices and the different legal ways of dealing with the problem in England and Scotland. Economists may refer to the influx of bullion during the wars of the eighteenth century and its effect on European society. Historians may find bibliographic information not available elsewhere. Nineteenth century archæological publications frequently were combined with architecture, history, or geology and palæontology (‘field studies’) and sometimes numismatic references appear to have been included almost as an afterthought. Indexers in archæological periodicals, even when numismatically oriented (and many obviously were indifferent to coins), combine such a variety of styles that their usefulness for each periodical must constantly be re-evaluated. After the national archæological publications, entries are given principally under counties. In the past couple of decades, several purely archæological periodicals have begun publication. These invariably refer to, and on occasion exhaustively catalogue, coins found in ‘digs’. However, these citations are of little numismatic interest per se and have been omitted from this review. During the same time period, developments in physics and chemistry have had a significant impact on certain aspects of numismatics. Two publications, Archæometry and Journal of Archæological Science, are reviewed here.

Taken together with Volume II, Part 1, researchers and librarians, now have a reference resource for thousands of subjects which, while concentrating on the British area, embrace the entire range of numismatics.
