English Palaeolithic Stone Age 'Henley Pit 1' Clactonian Flint Core
Flint, 320 grams, 9.1 cm. Palaeolithic, circa 400,000-200,000 BP. A bifacial core of triangular form, knapped in two-toned brown patinated flint. This core is typical of material found at Highlands Farm Pit at Rotherfield Peppard. The site is considered one of the most prolific Palaeolithic sites in Oxfordshire, yielding Clactonian tools and some axes. Reference: see Evans, Sir J. Provenance: ex Pickard collection, Surrey, UK; thence by descent 1978; formerly in the collection of Dr. Stanley Copeland in the early 1960s; found in Pit 1, Highlands Farm, Rotherfield Peppard, Henley, Oxfordshire (grid reference SU742813), UK in the 1950s; with old inscription 'PAL. CORE' in black in to one face.
