European Neolithic ‘Pecked and Ground’ Axe-Hammer
Rhyolite, 785 grams, 11.10 cm. Circa 3,000 BC. A massive battle axe-hammer in a grainy, banded, grey to reddish rhyolite, deeply patinated, with a rounded hammer face and a truncated diamond-shape top profile, central cylindrical hafting hole skilfully drilled, retains some of its preliminary pecked surface, shows few signs of use in antiquity on blade and hammer.
