European Neolithic ‘Pecked and Ground’ Axe-Hammer
Diorite, 495 grams, 16.70 cm. Circa 3,000 BC. A battle axe-hammer in a dark greenish-grey diorite, deeply patinated, with a rounded rectangular hammer face and anicely tapering blade, central double-tapered cylindrical hafting hole skilfully drilled, well finished, shows interesting and significant signs of use in antiquity on blade. Reference: McAlpine, Lord A. Antiquities from Europe and the Near East 1987, p.74. Provenance: property of a Gentleman; acquired in the 1970s.
