European Neolithic ‘Pecked and Ground’ Boat-Shaped Axe-Hammer
Quartzite, 901 grams, 16.40 cm. Circa 3,000 BC. A battle axe-hammer in a dark grey to reddish-grey quartzite, with a truncated conical hammer face, a curving profile, with the central cylindrical hafting hole skilfully drilled and tapered, nicely finished retaining some pecking, showing signs of use on blade. Reference: McAlpine, Lord A. Antiquities from Europe and the Near East 1987, p.74. Very fine condition. Provenance: property of a Gentleman; acquired in the 1970s.
